People do not know how to be a good passenger. I wonder many accidents have been caused by passengers. Here is a list of things passengers do in my vehicles that drive me nuts.
-Completely obstruct the right window, yet not volunteer if it is clear to pull out. Even after seeing me lean forward in a futile attempt to see around your ginormous fat head. Considering you’re the one more likely to be injured or killed when I blindly pull out to make that left turn, you’d think you’d mention that dump truck bearing down at us at 80 mph.
-blocking the right side mirror. My wife is especially fond of using her cell phone at night and holding it right in line with the mirror, so when I glance over, my eyes focus on the screen and not the mirror.
-sitting in the middle of the back seat when you are the only one in the back. Yes, i understand it’s hard enough to be part of the conversation when you’re in the back, but when you sit right in the middle, i can’t see out the rear window. The back headrests and the huge C-pillars block my vision enough already.
-Adjusting the climate control without asking. It is harder to concentrate on driving when I’m light headed and sweating. If you’re cold, bring a sweater.
-Asking me to look at things on the side of the road. When we’re next to them. Or past them. Really?
-not navigating/navigating poorly. If you’re not driving, and you’re driving in an unfamiliar area, it’s your responsibility to aid the driver. You should be watching for street signs and landmarks. The driver should be watching traffic. Also, if you’re reading directions from a list, give me the next turn, and maybe the one right after it if it’s close. please don’t give me the whole list at once. i will not remember it.
-not checking traffic during a merge. You will be able to see traffic on the highway long before I will as we come up the on ramp. I don’t really think it’s a good idea for me to drive looking over my shoulder, so maybe you could give a quick glance and see if there’s room to merge or if I need to adjust my speed. This is especially useful in states that have short/no acceleration lanes. I’m looking at you, Pennsylvania.
-Not helping at drive thru windows. I cannot drive and hold two sodas and a bag of food. could you maybe take it as I pass it to you? Also, when we’re back on the road, why are you just sitting there? Yes, if i’m getting fast food on a road trip, I will only order one-hand friendly food, i.e. small burgers, fries, sodas with straws instead of bottles, etc. No tacos, no chicken nuggets, no giant burgers dripping with sauces and toppings. But it would still be helpful if you got it out of the bag, opened the wrapper, or put the straw in my drink. Unless you like watching me drive with my knees at 75 mph.

Every one of those is a valid complaint.

That first problem is a big issue with my dad. He doesn’t trust me not to drive out into traffic (I’m in my 30s, I’ve been driving for more than half my life), so he leans forward to get a better view of what’s coming, thus completely obstructing my own view.

I agree completely...I always help the driver and get annoyed with passengers are....passengers...if you are useless, get it the back. Otherwise...do this:

The highway merging one, though? You should be able to merge safely and without swiveling your head over your shoulder without passenger guidance as well as without a passenger at all. It’s not like the left turn one where having somebody present might actually obstruct your view.

One more thing, being a rent a cop in your car. My mom is the worst:
“Your doing 15(kph) over, you need to slow down.” - The flow is doing it.
“Stop playing with the radio, it’s distracting you.” - I’m using steering wheel controls.
“Your merging to late” - I’m zipper merging, not creating a traffic jam.
“Stop talking on your phone” - I’m using my built in blue tooth.

I’ve cured all these problems.
I drive from the right seat.

One of my asshole friends likes to cross his leg on top of his other lap in a figure 4 manner. Foot all up on the dash panel. He wears flip-flops all the time.
Drives me nuts.

You forgot about “bumping the shifter out of gear while giving road head.”

You have obviously never driven on an interstate in Pennsylvania. Get off I81 in Scranton and try to get back on. During rush hour. In an underpowered vehicle. On ramps in PA cut through mountains, obstructing your view until the very end and have literally no room to merge. You may only have a split second to decide if you’re pulling out or if you’re stopping. It’s not like NY where you’ve got 1500 feet to get up to speed, check your mirrors and pull out. In PA, by the time you can see traffic in your mirrors, it’s too late. So if your passenger can help, they should.

“The passenger exists for the comfort of the driver” - My dads policy that i also enforce.

You have had some shitty passengers. My girlfriend is a lovely co-pilot and will even feed me so that I can pay attention to the road. She might not be perfect at navigating but at least she tries and will always attempt to help, I just have to be patient and be okay with wrong turns every once in a while. And it’s funny that we do not get along with temperature AT ALL. She is always cold and I am always hot. But in my Miata, the top down and heat on is always a great compromise. Then we both get what we want!

My mom has almost exclusively driven large minivans and I drive a Miata. So the perception of speed is so much worse in my car since the top is down and there is wind. She is a wreck if I need to drive her someplace but I dont drive with her too often. Going around turns are the best since I am going around it at like 3/10ths and she is like OMG SLOW DOWN while I am laughing thinking about what her reaction would be at the Tail of the Dragon.

-Putting a knee in the way of 5th gear(only a problem in my 4Runner because of a combination of a long truck-style shifter and awkwardly low seats meaning splayed out legs. Still, have some situational awareness)
-Not closing windows when we enter the highway
-Not closing windows when getting out of car

Good god, I’m currently living in the Lehigh Valley and drive a 4000 pound vehicle with 150 horsepower(when new, 25 years ago). Literally every merge is a case of floor it and pray because if I stop and try to yield I’ll never make it up to speed.

I’m still on my parent’s insurance and my mom transferred her 25 year accident-free onto me because it saves a lot more money on a 21 year old man driving 10,000+ miles a year than a 50+ year old woman driving 5,000 miles a year(yes I understand it is impossible for me to be 25 years accident free when I’ve had my license for 5 years, but our insurance allows that). Because of this vested interest in me not getting into any kind of accident, combined with the same thing(Quiet wafting Lexus RX for her and noisy, low and harsh E36 or noisy, tall harsh 4Runner for me) means an overwhelming amount of feedback.

My mom decided to put her feet on the dash of my wife’s S5. She still complains to this day about that.

My wife asked why I kept my old truck when i bought my new one. i told her “bench seat and column shift. easier access, babe.” she knew what i meant. she didn’t like it.

Why? She could be driving. Obviously more challenging, but still possible I guess.

On short entrance ramps there’s no reason they can’t offer a helping eye if they’re in the car.
